How to get everyone’s photos after a party (without chasing)

The best photos from your party are on your guests’ phones. The trick to getting them is doing it before everyone goes home.

Every birthday, engagement, reunion and work party ends the same way. A few hundred photos were taken, and the host sees about eleven of them. The rest sit on guests' phones until they are buried under the next weekend. Chasing people afterwards almost never works, and it is not because they do not care.

Why “send me your photos” fails

  • It is a chore for later. Scrolling back through a camera roll, choosing photos and sending them takes ten minutes nobody has on a Sunday.
  • Nobody knows where to send them. A text? The group chat? An email? Every option is slightly awkward, so people do none.
  • The moment has passed. On the night everyone is keen. A week later it feels like homework.

What works instead

Collect on the night, not after it

The single biggest change. If guests can share a photo the moment they take it, while they are still having fun, most of them will. Set it up before the party so there is one obvious place for photos to go.

Make it one step

A shared album that needs an app, or an account, or a particular kind of phone, loses people at every step. The simplest options let guests point their phone camera at a QR code and start sharing straight away.

Show the photos while the party is on

If there is a TV or a projector, put the photos on it as they arrive. People love seeing their shot come up, and it is the best advertisement there is: one table sees its photo appear, and the next table starts taking more.

Say it out loud, once or twice

A sign gets some people. One sentence during the speeches gets most of them: “There is a code on the table. Scan it and your photos go up on the screen.”

Send the album the next day

The next morning, send everyone the link to the full album. It thanks people for coming, it is a lovely way to relive the night, and the guests who missed it get one last nudge to add theirs.

If you only have a group chat

Then at least ask in the chat on the night, and ask people to send photos in HD so they are not compressed. Save the best ones to a single album yourself the next day, before they disappear up the chat.

A quick checklist

  • One place for photos, decided before the party
  • A QR code on the tables, the bar and anywhere people gather
  • A screen showing the photos, if you have one
  • One announcement early, one after the speeches
  • The album link sent the next morning

This is what GuestCam does: guests scan a QR code and share with no app, the photos play on a screen during the party, and you have one album to send the next morning. Its first big night was a 21st in Orange, where 33 guests shared 203 photos. See GuestCam for 21sts or for any party.
